The analysis of three society’s
The paper on the analysis of three society’s that include the, Song of Solomon, Waiting for the Barbarians, Adventures of Hackberry, and “To hell or Barbados” as well as reviewing the movies of To kill a Mocking Bird and Crash: In the Name of the Father.
- In the “Song of Solomon”, it comes out that a person’s origin can be used to define his or her place in the world.
- In the Adventure of Hackberry society, it come out that some people have hard time in fitting into the society due to color variations.
- In the “Waiting for the Barbarian”, there is much oppression and racial injustice as well as a feel, by some people, that their lives are mortgaged into a society that has gone rotten with evil and less consideration of virtues
- the two movies, the society is dirty with issues that are even portrayed in today’s societies
In the “Song of Solomon,” the context is South Africa where prejudice is high as well as racial discrimination. In this case, it comes out that a person’s origin can be used to define his or her place in the world. Through physical manifestations such as Hagar’s belly button, one’s origin can be defined as being able to be defined (Van Wyk). All people are born by mothers having been impregnated by their fathers, which is a natural phenomenon and need to be acceptable by the society. This farther gives an implication that all people are the same whether white or black or any other skin color. South Africa’s racism was so severe that the blacks could be manipulated into voting the wrong people. Other than this, there were schools whose origin is based on racial discrimination. Races like the Indians and other Asians are not interested in social or political pillars of the country since the blacks, who were one discriminated due to their origin, are now in charge of all pillars of the country’s economy.. In the “Waiting for the Barbarian”, there is much oppression and racial injustice as well as a feel, by some people of Ireland, that their lives are mortgaged into a society that has gone rotten with evil and less consideration of virtues (Coetzee 64). In the Irish society, one would live in fear that his or her anger may lead to destruction especially on his or her fiction. One can one be relieved by leaving such a society or remaining silent. Racism in Ireland has been accompanied by issues like protests, discrimination, and hate speech among other social evils. The Adventure of Hackberry talks of the United States society. in this case, it come out that some people have hard time in fitting into the society due to color variations. Racism in the US was done alongside ethnic discrimination. The society may not readily give in to some aspects and for one to fit in that society, the person has to act according to the wishes of the people of the US (Twain 43). To fit in the society for instance, learning religion was the only way to be referred as civilized during the colonial period but this may not lead to acceptance. The reason why Huck Finn finds it hard to survive in the first place is that he lack aspect of civilization and Widow Douglas took that initiative to teach him Christianity in order to fit in that society but he still faced discrimination because of his color. Blacks were hardly respected in the US by the native whites since they were being taken as slaves. Many people are hard on Huck who has to withstand the prejudice or discrimination hoping to fit in the same society one day in the future especially before coming of age. The only people who could be close to those individuals going through a suffering are those going through similar problems.
In any of the three societies, it may come out that the gap between the nobles and the poor is great but the poor are always in good terms especially through consolation efforts. The American society is even worse and this can be explained in terms of why Jim, who is the Miss Watson’s slave, becomes too close to Huck after almost being rejected by those terming themselves as holly and civilized. Huck finds favors in various ways such as having Tom Sawyer, who is the best fighter in the town, as his best friend (Twain 57). Huck feels under protective care of Tom Sawyer and in this case, he is able gain some respect and recognition from his peers who would otherwise disrespect him. This aspect is an implication that friends determine people’s destiny and the way the society views them and respects them.
The three societies in this case seem to portray a common aspect of poor living conditions, negligence, discrimination, prejudice, and many other attributes of an evil society. The same issues are seen in the society’ “To Hell Barbados”, whereby Irish men, children, and women were being transported to Virginia and Barbados for working as slaves in such regions (Dempsey 81). They are transported in poor conditions in which they are hardly taken care of as people given that they have been purchased as slaves. The biggest problem is that they are treated as subjected that have been purchased and traded for the purpose of serving as slaves. There working conditions are therefore poor and very inhuman. The same problem happens with the beginning of Ireland colonial period and the European imperialism. The society in this case is portrayed as very brutal with less consideration of newcomers, who are the Irish people, coming to Virginia and Barbados as slaves. The society similarly is therefore brutal, corrupt, as well as very unjust (Dempsey 82). The society is portrayed as evil in the sense that every individual is unfair, selfish, and hardly guided by religion.
Still on a virtually rotten society, Waiting for the Barbarians is a society that shows how the society can be full of evil deeds and selfness of leaders and those who consider themselves civilized. The context is that of an empire and the town magistrate’s voice is doomed by a state of emergency that has been called upon. Rumors prop that the natives, who are the barbarians implying uncivilized people have come up with a plan to attack the empire (Dempsey 101). The rumor creates a state whereby the barbarians are captured and tortured out of no real reason but based on the rumor. It goes to an extent of making an innocent girl being left crippled. The magistrate takes care of the girl but ends up into a legitimate relationship with her despite that she is crippled and partly blinded by the torturers. Trying to fight for the common Barbarians causes the magistrate to be locked in a cell and lacking freedom for a very long time. Even after gaining freedom to get out of the cell, the magistrate found out that he had nowhere to escape.
In all other cases including the two movies, society is dirty with issues that are even portrayed in today’s societies. Rejection in the society is a major case, which may come in terms of discrimination based on race, skin color, and religion. Even in the movie “To Kill a Mocking Bird”, the society is full of evil deeds such as prejudice that makes people become victims of bigotry in the town because of their differences (Nichols 79). People are found to collaborate with other people of the same category in terms of physical traits, religions, or social classes. Given that one is hardly within the group as far as the required traits are concerned, he or she may not be considered and would otherwise be discriminated or neglected. In the “Crash” movie, John is neglected by his father after his mother dies (Nichols 98). The neglect comes as an image of what happens today. Families hardly maintain oneness and anything including death of one parent may lead to the other parent reduce his or care on the children. The society is full of prejudice, discrimination, and many other individual differences that make people look down upon others.
