Interview and Interdisciplinary Issue Identification

Interview and Interdisciplinary Issue Identification

Interview Summary

I was able to conduct an interview with a healthcare administrator that was based on the current issues that face healthcare organizations. The administrator, Mr. Moses, claimed that the current problems that are facing them in health organizations are costs and transparency. He further clarified that the prices of medical and pharmaceutical services were too high, and thus many patients were left without complete medical assistance. This is an area that he claimed they were seeking for improvements. A more in-depth question-answer session with Moses revealed that there wasn’t any price transparency in many healthcare organizations. This meant that the patients coming in sick would not have any idea of the price they are to pay for the medical services until a few days later after their recovery when they are shocked by the exorbitant prices. He stated that price transparency was of great importance in the healthcare organizations since the patients can acquire prior information on the quality of the medical care provided and also enables them to have the ability to choose the most practical medical care present, which fits into their income. Since healthcare is not price transparent, patients cannot make a wise decision as to the medical services to be used in their treatment, and thus, as a result, they incur very high costs with low-quality healthcare.

Collaboration Approaches

The collaboration approaches that are considered applicable in the establishment of an interdisciplinary team to address healthcare organization issues include; reactive approach, proactive approach, and the Realtime approach.  In the reactive approach, the primary aspect here is the scrutiny of the non-success of the system. It is during this approach that failure is analyzed in two ways. First, what kind of reasons resulted in the failure and second, ways in which the interdisciplinary team can steer clear of failure in future occurrences. The aftermath of this approach is that safety regulations, courses of action, and directives are established for the healthcare organization to address issues. The next method, which is the Proactive approach is quite different from the former approach. This approach’s primary purpose is to investigate the system before failure. This approach is essential since, after this analysis, measures can be put into place to deal with the forecasted failure. However, the big problem with this approach is that it is more focused on issues that might go wrong instead of the issues that are working right. The third approach is the real-time approach. This approach focuses on the issues that are not predictable and those that differ from past experiences. Here the interdisciplinary team is armed with inflated abilities to be able to restore the system to its original state through extensive training with simulation procedures (“Interdisciplinary Collaboration, Team Functioning, and Patient Safety,” 2020).

Incorporating Evidence Based practice within an interdisciplinary team

The ways through which evidence-based practice can be incorporated within the interdisciplinary team include; the creation of awareness and interest. This strategy should be utilized early in the evidence-based practice (EBP) process. Here the group of healthcare providers should call attention to the advantages of an EBP change. These advantages include harmony with the organization’s values. This would thus, as a result, promote awareness on the importance of the EBP practice among various clinicians across the health sector. The next strategy is the creation of knowledge and commitment. This strategy involves using methods and techniques that raise practitioners’ comprehension of and dedication to evidence-based practices. This consists of the use of symposiums that are educational to increase the knowledge and commitment levels. However, education is to be integrated with other techniques to ensure effectiveness. The next strategy is the promotion of action and adoption among the interdisciplinary teams. In this strategy, interactive sessions are conducted to ensure that the entire team of healthcare providers are on board in matters of EBP. It is at this point that they are advised to develop the necessary skills to effect the change. The final strategy is pursuing integration and Sustainability. In this strategy, the EBP is incorporated into the interdisciplinary team through the use of peer influence and also the usage of data that is comparative data (Cullen & Adams, 2012). The issue that issue from the above interview in which the Evidence-based interdisciplinary approach would be considered appropriate is that of price transparency in healthcare.

Change theories and a leadership strategy

The change theories that could facilitate the development of an interdisciplinary solution to an organizational issue include the innovation diffusion theory and the chaos theory. The Innovation diffusion theory contains five key steps, which are knowledge, persuasion, decision, implementation, and confirmation. This theory is essential since it emphasizes the involvement of vital people, for instance, the policymakers who are focused on the change taking place and therefore maximizing on team strength. Next is the Chaos theory. This theory could facilitate the development of a solution through the process of “controlled randomness.” This refers to the use of discernible and anticipated patterns in the quest for change. On the other hand, the leadership strategy that could also lead to an interdisciplinary solution is the Power-coercive strategy. This involves the use of power via legal authority. This strategy is used when there is massive resistance to change since minimal effort is used by the care providers to provide solutions to organizational issues (Udod & Wagner, 2020).
